The Legend of the Exodus from Kem-Duat

III. THROUGHOUT THEIR JOURNEY THEY WERE BESET BY APEP’S CHILDREN, which Reri-ny-re-a-khet clove with great sweeps of his blade, and which Neser-senef-s enkindled with her fire, and which Iah-kem-et smote with her hands and feet. But Apep’s children numbered many times more than even the largest army. And at the second division of Duat Neser-senef-s was wounded; at the third division of Duat Abi-ra-khet and Iah-kem-et were wounded; at the fourth division of Duat Reri-ny-re-a-khet and Neser-senef-s were wounded; and at the fifth division of Duat Hedj-sesmet and Neser-senef-s were wounded.

Reri-ny-re-a-khet spake unto Abi-ra-khet:— “Loose thy battle rage to drive back these toxiferous worms.” And the shining-eyed one said, “I shall not, for like sunfire the battle rage consumeth all, and neither foe nor friend will survive this conflagration.” And Neser-senef-s said, “They hold hatred for firelight deep in their bellies and seek to quench it; so I shall shoot flaming arrows behind us from my bow so they might be divided.” And so she did, and the children of Apep were divided.

They traveled through the first division of Duat, which is called NET-RA, and found no akh; and they traveled through the second division of Duat, which is called URNES, and found no akh; and they traveled through the third division of Duat, which is called NET-NEB-UA-KHEPER-AUT, and found no akh; and they traveled through the fourth division of Duat, which is called ANKHET-KHEPERU, and found no akh; and they traveled through the fifth division of Duat, which is called AMENT, and found no akh; and they traveled through the sixth division of Duat, which is called METCHET-MU-NEBT-TUAT, and found no akh; and they traveled through the seventh division of Duat, which is called THEPHET-ASAR, and found no akh; and they traveled through the eighth division of Duat, which is called TEBAT-NETERU-S, and found no akh; and they traveled through the ninth division of Duat, which is called BEST-ARU-ANKET-KHEPERU, and found no akh; and they traveled through the tenth division of Duat, which is called METET-QA-UTCHEBU, and found no akh; and they traveled through the eleventh division of Duat, which is called RE-EN-QERERT-APT-KHATU, and found no akh.

And then they came upon the twelfth division of Duat, which is called THEN-NETERU, and there they found what was once Osiris’s holy city, known as SEKHET HETEPET, and within there were akh.
